We have a number of seals that visit the surrounding areas of Torbay. Many haul out on the wave baffles in Brixham Harbour or spend time on the rocks of many of the coastal features of the area. Part of our role is to identify and catalogue them. Documenting their lives when they visit our area. Each seal carries unique patterns on their fur, and over time distinctive marks. You can help us by providing images you have taken of the seals, but to help us we have listed a few important points about the images that will mean that they will be clear enough for our team to make a positive identification.
Seals can be identified by their fur patterns, this is easier with the more highly patterned females. They can also be identified by scars to the face or body.
Some seals may have an identifying rear flipper tag. This would mean they were rescued as a pup and then released back into the wild. So we can often trace them back to find out where they've come from.
IMPORTANT: Only take a picture from a distance. Please do not disturb the seals at all.
Here are some pointers to help you help us with your image.
